Den Lighting - Articles Surfing

A den is the place to gather as a family, watch television, and relax after a hard day. Having the proper den lighting can make the difference between a room that is inviting, and one that sends chills up your spine. Let's face it; there is nothing appealing about a room that is dark and lifeless. Chances are your family will avoid the one space that is supposed to be for them to enjoy, if there is poor lighting in the room.

Den lighting is a great opportunity for you to express your personality. This is the space in the house that is meant for family and close friends, so you want this room to be fun and relaxing. That doesn't mean you have to forgo style. It simply means to leave the stuffy decorating for a formal living or dining room. Regardless what type of d'cor elements you prefer, there is more to choosing den lighting than finding a fixture you like.

Proper illumination requires a little planning before you buy. It is important to consider all of the elements that are currently in the room, if you want to determine the amount, type, and style of den lighting fixtures to purchase. Begin by examining any natural light that penetrates the room. If natural illumination is prevalent during the day, you will want to focus on fixtures that will brighten things up, when the sun goes down. However, if the room receives very little sunlight, you will need a well-rounded approach.

Other factors to consider are the colors of walls and furniture. You might be surprised to realize that a room that is very dark is receiving ample sunlight. This can happen, when a relatively small area has a dark wall color. If you combine that with darkly colored furniture, the space will soak up all of the natural light. In this scenario, you might want to start your den lighting project with a fresh coat of paint in a lighter shade. Now you can begin selecting the fixtures for the room.

When illuminating any space in your home, including a den, the best results will be achieved, if you incorporate a variety of lighting devices. This requires you to space the fixtures throughout the room. You will want to address all of the illumination problems, by using appropriate fixtures. For example, you might want to begin by adding track or recessed ceiling lights that can be used to illuminate the entire room or highlight art pieces. Then determine what type of tasks will be performed in your den.

Task lighting is an important element, if your family will be using the den for more than just watching television together. Playing games, reading, or working a crossword puzzle all require a certain amount of light to be enjoyable. Table and floor lamps are an attractive way to tackle the need for task illumination. Both options are available in a variety of styles and colors, so you can find the perfect compliment to the room's d'cor. After you select fixtures for task illumination, you will be well on your way to creating an excellent gathering place for your family.

One device that is often overlooked, but can be a valuable asset in den lighting is a dimmer switch. Dimmer switches allow you to control the amount of lighting and set a tone for the room. The ability to adjust the brightness of the light being expelled from a fixture can make television watching or game playing more enjoyable.
