Move It Or Lose It! - Articles Surfing

When a muscle is not used for a good length of time it atrophies, that is to say it slowly becomes less and less able to function as it should and eventually it dies. We move about our daily lives enough to keep our bodies from this awful state whether we exercise or not so it isn't a great fear for us. I think of how I function day in and day out as a professed exercise hater and I know that I get older things aren't as pliable as they used to be. I can't bend over as easily and have to help myself out of a chair on occasion. Well that's okay, you say, we all get a little stiffer as we age, its natural.

I guess what I'm wondering is why we don't put the little extra effort into each day, just a bit at a time to make it easier on ourselves. I remember as a child going over to my friend's house after school and snickered as we watched her mom dancing around the living room with a duster in her hand. She saw us and explained that she was dancing to lose weight and that every little movement counted. I thought she was a nut at the time but now that I am her age (how could that possibly be??) I understand how sound that seemingly crazy doctrine of hers was. If I put a few extra steps into my housework or parked a little further from the mall in the parking lot, I would expend a little more energy, and dare I say, calories each day. That adds up over time and while I wouldn't be in peak physical condition through this mild routine, it also wouldn't upset my routine as much as a workout would and I personally would find it a lot more palatable than donning spandex and going to the gym (don't picture it, you'll go blind).

Living a healthy lifestyle is simple, you eat good nutritious food, indulge in junk food only occasionally and you remain active. Notice please that I said activity, not exercise. I guess that is what my friend's mom was trying to get through to us but at ten years old we were in the enviable position of having plenty of energy and no weight concerns so we could pooh-pooh her idea. I have to interject here that she also went out in the yard with a scarf wrapped around her bra thinking people would mistake it for leisure wear'they didn't.

In the spirit of getting active I bought a Tony Little Gazelle Lifestyle. It was the least expensive venture into the world of exercise that I could get and thought it would at least be worth a try. I have only been using it for a few days so the verdict is out on the results it will bring but I have to admit that just as Tony says on the video, I do feel better when I have exercised whether I went really hard or took it easy. Any amount of movement is an improvement on my couch potato status. As a sidebar, as over the top as Tony Little seems on his ubiquitous infomercials I found him to be one of the few 'personal' (as personal as you can get in a video) trainers that I actually liked. He seems like he sincerely does this for the good of the people wanting to make improvements in their lives and he certainly walks his talk. What can I say? I like the guy and that in itself goes a long way in maintaining the motivation of getting active each day. I don't have a support group or running club that I belong to as I would rather stay home and stick hot pins in my eyes, so having a piece of equipment and video to watch that I can identify with and actually use is paramount in my development.

The ultimate guide for what is right for you is exactly that: find what is right for you and not what anyone else thinks it should be. Any movement is an improvement!
