The Benefits Of Cosmetic Dentistry - Articles Surfing

If you are one of the many people who hide their smile because you are all too aware that you don't have perfect teeth, you might be interested in learning more about cosmetic dentistry. Technological breakthroughs have made a beautiful smile more realistic and affordable for average Americans. Although high profile members of society have been using cosmetic dentistry for years to dramatically improve their appearances, the benefits of cosmetic dentistry are now being discovered and experienced by the masses.

Cosmetic dentistry can not only beautify your smile, but can also be used to align teeth and improve their functionality. Common cosmetic procedures include porcelain veneers, tooth whitening, dental crowns, tooth or dental bonding, invisible braces and mercury-free white fillings. Some of the benefits of several of these procedures are as follows:

Porcelain veneers: A porcelain veneer can be an excellent way to make a cosmetic change for a tooth. A porcelain veneer or a laminate is an ultra-thin shell of porcelain that is bonded directly to the front surface of a tooth. This procedure is generally only done to improve cosmetic appearance. Under the direction of a skilled dentist and staff which includes a ceramist, porcelain veneers can create incredibly beautiful and natural smiles. This procedure can be an ideal choice for improving the appearance of the front teeth by masking discolorations, whitening teeth and/or reshaping a smile. As compared to dental bonding, porcelain veneers usually look more natural and they resist staining well.

Teeth whitening: A teeth whitening process can be one of the simplest and least expensive ways to make a substantial cosmetic improvement to your smile. There are several different whitening techniques available and can vary greatly in price. Some of the options include teeth whitening strips, professional teeth whitening treatments, tray-based teeth whitening, and paint-on teeth whiteners. Whitening strips can often be purchased over the counter and are very inexpensive. Professional teeth whitening treatments, though not as inexpensive as the strips, can have quick results in one visit. Probably the greatest benefit to whitening in general is that as a process it makes no structural changes to a tooth but has great outcomes. At some point in the future you can decide to or not to repeat the teeth whitening process again. Either choice is entirely optional.

Dental crowns: Dental crowns can be used to make the same type of major cosmetic changes for teeth that porcelain veneers can. The difference is that unlike porcelain veneers which only cover the front sides of teeth, dental crowns are put on teeth like gloves and encase the entire aspect of a tooth that lies above the gum line. Dental crowns are much stronger and more durable than porcelain veneers.

Dental bonding: Dental bonding or tooth bonding can refer to a number of different, yet related, dental techniques. Basically what happens is, after a tooth's surface has been properly prepared, a composite tooth bonding is used to fill in, shape or create parts of a tooth. Dental bonding can refer to any process where a dentist attaches white colored dental filling material to a tooth.

Dental bonding is often used as a way to improve the appearance of a defect found on the surface of a tooth, to replace tooth structure that has chipped or broken off, or to repair damage caused by tooth decay. However, it can also be used to resurface the entire front side of a tooth solely for cosmetic purposes. When compared with other cosmetic dentistry procedures, dental bonding can be relatively inexpensive and is a procedure that can usually be completed in one visit.

Cosmetic dentistry has many benefits. There are several cosmetic dentistry techniques that are commonly used today and each has its own advantages. Consult your dentist before having any cosmetic dentistry done in order to determine which procedure is right for you.
