A Few Things To Keep In Mind When Setting Up a Mailing List

Once you have gathered email addresses of people who are interested in your website and have opted in to receive mailings from you, you need to create a mailing list to keep the interest going. A mailing list will serve as a reminder to people of your online presence and it will keep them updated on events and news regarding your site. You can alert them to changes, promotions and contests that occur on your page. You can also use your mailing list to send out important alerts. You can tell your customers about sales and specials that you may not advertise elsewhere.

Many questions may arise when a webmaster sets out to create a mailing list. There are questions regarding how to collect the addresses, what to include on mass emails and other information. There are some basic guidelines, however, that you can follow when setting up your list that will make it nearly painless.

Collecting Email Addresses
In today's online world, many web sites ask for email address from internet users. This makes them very familiar and comfortable with giving that information to some of the sites that they visit. In fact, many people have set aside special email addresses just for this purpose. It is not unusual for a visitor to give their email address in exchange for information that they desire. This is a first step in collecting email addresses to build a list.

One way to get people to hand over their email addresses is to offer then something in return. A subscription to an e-newsletter or e-course are popular options. Many webmasters will place a small box on each web page giving visitors the option of entering their email address to receive this offer. A plus here is that if people sign up for your offer you know that they are interested in what you have to offer. This makes them relevant traffic.

What to Include in Mailing List Correspondence
You want the emails that you send to your members to be relevant. People want information that they can use and that pertains to them. Boring news will not build your list. Talk directly to your members in language that they can understand. Make your readers look forward to reading your correspondence, not delete it the moment they see it in their inbox.

The correspondence that you send out to your mailing list should include a link that leads to the latest changes or updates to your site. For instance, you may link to a 'product of the month' or a big sale. Don't overdo it with the links in the email, but adding some well thought out links is highly suggested.

Finally, the primary objective of a mailing list is to inform your readers and keep you in touch with them. It should spark their curiosity and motivate them to click on links to browse through the site. This will hopefully create a regular following for your business and site and eventually convince visitors to spend more time on your site.
