Airedale Terriers - Courageous, Protective And Loyal - Articles Surfing

They originated in the country of York. The original Airedale Terrier was called the Waterside Terrier and later was crossed with the Otterhound. The Airedale has been used to hunt big game in Canada and Africa. It was also used in World War II as an army sentry dog. Sometimes it was used as a police dog. Today's Airedales are watchdogs, guard dogs, used in hunting, military work, police work, and competitive obedience.

The Airedale needs to feel that is respected and loved. Some Airedales that see family members as submissive will be dominant toward them. They need to know the owner is 'Top Dog' and that they are required to do what is expected of them. They get along with other household pets, but be careful, as they may try to dominate other dogs. Start at a young age socializing them with other animals and let them know that dominance is not a behavior you will allow from them.

The coat of an Airedale Terrier is hard, short and a double coat. A professional groomer should see them at least twice a year. The hair in their pads can grow rather quickly so you will want to make sure you keep it trimmed as needed along with the nails. If you do not have them properly groomed by your groomer, you will notice a lot of shedding. You should brush their wiry coats daily. It is recommended to wash the beard daily, as well, because of possible food residue.

Airedale Terriers are a pretty healthy dog; however, they are prone to eye problems, skin infections, and hip dysplasia. They tend to get dry skin, and if they do, you should feed them an omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid adjusted diet. They require a lot of exercise because they are pretty active.

Airedale Terriers don't usually make good apartment dogs because of the exercise they require, and the fact that they need a lot of room to play. The male dogs are usually between 22 to 24 inches tall and weigh 50 to 65 pounds. The female dogs are between 22 to 23 inches tall and weigh 40 to 45 pounds. They usually live 10 to 12 years.
