The criteria used to select the best places include those that make a place livable such as mass-transit systems, fitness opportunities such as expanded sidewalks, better health care, and a wide range of mixed-use housing, according to this magazine. The following are the top five best places to live for people who are older than 50. Atlanta, Georgia: Atlanta's sophisticated urban lifestyle and Southern charm have always drawn settlers. The city offers a plethora of cultural and volunteer opportunities for retirees. It's diverse housing types, pedestrian friendly walkways and fitness opportunities, makes this city very attractive. Atlanta has a median housing price of $171,800. Portland, Oregon: Portland beckons with its European charm. This environmentally progressive city offers retirees a sophisticated and revitalized district called Pearl that includes everything from walkways and restaurants to entertainment. On the fitness side, the city offers miles of biking trails that are safe for retirees. The median home price is $280,800. Chandler, Arizona: This forward-looking city offers one a gracious desert living. Chandler was recently voted among the top ten towns in the nation for walking. The Paseo Trail, a 6.5 mile recreational path is a popular fitness zone. Chandler has a median housing price of $297,900. Boston, Massachusetts: Boston's Beacon Hill offers a historically genteel lifestyle that is rich in culture and restaurants.
