Farming The Natural Way - Can We Give Up Our Nutritional Supplements Yet? - Articles SurfingLook in any grocery store we can find rows and rows of fresh fruit and vegetables. They look good so they must be good, right? Wrong. Most modern farming methods are geared towards giving our fresh foods cosmetic surgery so that they look appealing. However, these processes often take away vital minerals, vitamins, and other nutritional ingredients than make our fruit healthy. So, we end up being confronted with shelves of fresh fruit that looks healthy, but is lacking in vitamins and nutrition. To avoid this, and avoid the need for nutritional supplements, organic farming is being favored over modern chemical-based methods. By giving nutritional supplements to our fruit and vegetables, we can eat healthy without the need for taking vitamins ourselves. Here is a comparison between organic and modern methods of farming. Waste Not Want Not Due to the excessive usage of chemicals, chances of post harvest rots are more common in fruits and vegetables grown on modern farms. In addition, usage of chemicals also increases the moisture loss rate up to 400% in an apple and up to 3-4 times in skinned potatoes. This means a lot of modern farmed fruit and vegetables is thrown away - revealing the lie that would have us believe modern farming is more efficient than organic methods. Healthy Eating Vs. Nutritional Supplements We realize the need for vitamin nutritional supplements because of the lack of nutrients in our normal diet. But we also know that, if we could, eating a healthy balanced diet would be the first choice. The same is true of fruit and vegetables. Although modern farming methods try to replace vitamin and mineral loss during growth by giving their produce nutritional supplements, they can never give the full amount of nutrients that would be present had the fruit been grown organically. Natural Nutritional Supplements for the Soil In organic farming methods, the soil is considered a living entity, which feeds the plants that in turn feed us. Organic farming methods strive to work in harmony with the natural biological systems by using natural nutritional supplements where needed instead of polluting vegetation with chemicals. Rotations and diversification such as polycultures, hedgerows, and windbreaks are used in organic farming methods to ensure good quality fruit and vegetables. Diversification ensures that pests do not destroy crops and cover crops are used to hold the soil and improve fertility. Inner-Beauty Fruit and vegetables grown using organic farming method are costlier and less attractive than those grown using chemical farming method. However they are undeniably better for us - having a much higher vitamin and mineral content than the shiny, perfect, fruit-shaped bag of nothing that is commonly sold to us. The cost is higher, so when deciding upon whether to use nutritional supplements or not, the cost of organic produce and vitamins should be compared thoroughly. Natural farming methods ensure a greater harmony of living beings, conserves the ecosystem, and conforms to the laws of nature. Crops grown using natural farming methods contain more vitamins, more minerals, and more health. Nutritional supplements may be needed until organic farming once again becomes the norm, but it is still a hope for the future.
