How Can A Fibromyalgia Diet Help? - Articles Surfing

If you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, then you might be wondering if a fibromyalgia diet could help ease your symptoms.

The idea behind a fibro diet is to help you regain your strength and ease the pains that come with your condition. So, what are the components of this type of diet, and how can they help you?

To understand how adjusting your diet can provide relief, it's important to understand the symptoms that are associated with fibromyalgia.

Although the cause of fibromyalgia is a heavily debated topic, what is certain are the symptoms. The most dominant symptom is musculoskeletal pain, followed by fatigue and characterized by multiple tenderpoints found in particular areas of the body. Sleep disorders are also common, as are irritable bowel symptoms and headaches, as well as a lack of mental clarity, sometimes called 'brain fog'.

There are a number of treatment options for fibromyalgia sufferers including mild to moderate exercise, which reduces muscle pain. Good exercises are non-impact ones like swimming or walking. Relaxation is key, so it pays to listen to your body and rest when it tells you to. Medication is also available for sleep disorders and reducing muscle pain. Underpinning all these treatment options is diet.

We've all heard the adage 'we are what we eat' and that is particularly true for fibromyalgia sufferers. Today it is all too easy to buy pre-packaged convenience meals that all we have to do to 'prepare' a meal is place it in the microwave. However, what is this food giving you other than convenience? Lots of preservatives, additives, colorings, flavorings, salt and sugar. Doesn't sound very nutritious does it?

When suffering from a debilitating condition like fibromyalgia time saving activities can be a great relief, however when it comes to food it pays to spend the time preparing fresh produce. Enlist the help of family and friends if you need to.

There are a number of common trigger foods that seem to effect a lot of fibromyalgia sufferers and they are all found in our day to day diets. These trigger foods include:
Caffeine
Sugar, including artificial sweeteners
Chocolate
Alcohol
High fat milk, cheeses and ice cream
Soda
Cured meats
Processed foods containing preservatives and additives
Salt

When choosing foods to help ease your symptoms you should select low fat meats, choosing poultry and fish over red meat, include plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, beans and nuts.

Some fibromyalgia sufferers also have food allergies, commonly wheat, dairy or nightshade plants or an intolerance to carbohydrates, so it may take a little time to find the right diet for you.

The above list is not exhaustive and oneway of figuring out a diet that will help your symptoms is to try eliminating foods that you think make your symptoms worse and track the outcome in a food diary.

It may take a bit of trial and error to find the right fibromyalgia diet for you but its worth the time as the results can be significant.
