This precious stone is also known as chalcedony and has been a part of the artistic world for many centuries and used to make small ornamental objects, jewelry, and sculptures. It is in Asia Minor that the name of chalcedony originated, directly from the ancient Sea of Marmara and the town of Calcedon, which were the active trading center for numerous gems and economy depended on that. It was in this specific region that agate was widely used with gold and other precious gems to make items such as goblets, idols, carvings, inlay with Agate and used to craft other functional objects. Agate is a varied colored precious stone that ancient cultures regarded as an object, when worn to make for a more 'agreeable and persuasive person' along with being in 'God's favor'. In Germany during the mid 1800's, agates of brown or black persuasion that had a white ring in the middle were believed to be to ward off the evil eye if kept upon on their bodies. With a range of colors, variations in design and trans-lucidness, it is no wonder that artisans for centuries have been making sculptures in miniature formations. These sculptures come in every imaginable formation possible. Many historical agate sculptures were expressions of the cultural around the artists whom created these extraordinary pieces of beauty and elegance. Agate is a precious stone that is hard enough to with stand the hands of time and still hold its elegant demur characteristics of the time period the artistic natural form was created in.
