Hose Reels - Articles SurfingHose reels make it safe and easy to transport long hoses throughout a facility or across commercial grounds. High pressure air and water hoses are vital to a wide range of industrial applications, and hose are used in everything ranging from delivery air, oil, water, to hydraulic rescue operations. Choosing the right hose reel for your application is simple if you follow the following six principles in making your selection. 1. Select your reel based on hose I.D., O.D., and Length It is a good idea to always select a reel with a greater hose capacity than you actually require. Rewinding the hose onto the reel will be much easier, and the hose will also be more protected from the disc dimension. A slightly larger hose reel will also protect the hose even if the coils are not rewound in a uniform fashion. 2. Compare the size of your hose against the inlet and outlet sizes. By reducing the size of the fitting and the hose, you allow for more capacity on the reel. If you have questions about *o-ring seal compatibility or special application requirements, call one of our specialists for detailed information and any necessary calculations to determine model type and specification. 3. Select a method of retraction that is safest and most convenient for your purposes You can choose from spring Driven, hand crank or motor driven retraction. Spring driven hose reels feature an automatic rewind that requires no power source. The operator can guide the hose or cord as it self-retracts and winds around the cylinder. The hand crank hose reel requires manually cranking the reel and guiding the hose or cord evenly by hand. Motor driven units will automatically rewind the hose, but they require an AC, DC, Air, or Hydraulic power source in order to operate. You can control the retraction of the hose with on/off switches and speed controllers while you manually guide the hose or cord back onto the reel. 4. Mounting Position is another key factor in reel selection. Floor-ceiling mounts are standard in all models. Some series can be shipped in the wall truck mount position by request. Talk to your material handling vendor about which mounting option works best for your situation. 5. Select the type of hose you will be using. Factors such as operating temperature, product temperature, and PSI all play an important role in hose selection. Always use good quality hose rated for the service and operating pressure required. Poor quality hoses will expand and contract under pressure surges. When this happens, the hose that remains on the reel may bind and become difficult to handle. In extreme cases, poor quality hose may expand under pressure to the extent that the reel becomes distorted and inoperable. 6. Customize your hose reel. We provide a number of ad-on features such as roller brackets, special mounting brackets, carry handles, and carts. Talk to a material handling expert about which accessories will best customize your product to your process flow and facility needs.
