Effective Speed Reading Techniques - Articles Surfing

Contrary to popular belief, speed reading is not mere magic. In fact, some good professional speed reading classes are available if you're serious in enhancing your speed reading skills. Some classes could help you improve and develop your reading and comprehension skills. There are actually a lot of people out there who think they are able to speed-read; but when you ask them a question about what they've read, they can't actually get the answer right.

Speed reading is not just looking, and then flipping over one page to another. There are actual methods and techniques that you should use in order to be able to read fast and actually understand what you're reading. Speed reading is actually based on how well your eyes are drawn to motion and how you use that motion on the pages that you're reading.

Here a few basic speed reading techniques that would help you get started on your quest towards better and faster reading:

The first speed reading technique is called 'the hand.' You simply place your right hand on the page that you are reading then slowly move it down while your eyes follow. Try to read as much as you can. Make sure to keep an even and slow motion and try not to be mindful of your right hand because it'll just distract you from your reading. This simple technique can actually help you learn how to speed-read; but if you're just starting to learn, take it easy on yourself and do not rush. Obviously if you are left-handed, you should use your dominant hand instead.

The next speed reading technique is using a card to block some of the passages that you are not meant to read yet. Speed reading may seem to be a very daunting task and you might actually commit that mistake of reading something repeatedly. Placing a card over the words that you shouldn't be reading yet would help you block out the 'distractions' and would help you concentrate more on the passages that you are supposed to read.

Another good speed reading technique that you might want to try is 'the sweep' technique. Cup your dominant hand and use it to 'underline' the words or lines that you are trying to read. This will help you focus more on what you are reading by putting more emphasis on just the things that you should be reading.

Another point to consider is that you should have a good posture while reading. Sit down with your back straight in order to help you get a good starting position. You must also be a good reader even before attempting to learn how to speed-read. Speed reading is not all about developing comprehension skills and your vocabulary; you should at least be well versed or you'll just get confused while trying to quicken your reading pace.
