Article Surfing ArchiveSneaky Sound System Achieves Surprising Success as an Independent Group - Articles SurfingAt one time, trying to make it as an independent band would most certainly spell disaster for any group. Today that is no longer the case. The widespread success of Australian based dance group Sneaky Sound System definitely points to the fact success can be achieved independently. The group, which is comprised of chief songwriter Black Angus, Peter Dolso on Guitar, Jono Sloan on bass, Connie Mitchell on vocals, Mc Double D and Felix Bloxsom on drums, is rapidly becoming one of the most popular acts in the world. In the fall of 2007, Sneaky Sound System brought home the awards for Best Dance Release and Breakthrough Artist at the 2007 ARIA Music Awards. Given the group's humble beginnings, their rapid rise to fame is nothing short of astounding. Angus McDonald, better known as Black Angus, partnered with Daimon Downey in 2004 to establish what would be the beginnings of the group. In fact, they even went so far as to establish their own record label. After Peter Dolso joined the group, the trio set up a studio for the newly established Whack Recordings in and quickly dubbed it 'The House of Whack.' Almost immediately they began to create their own unique blend of music. The group's first release, 'Hip Hip Hooray' quickly garnered attention from local radio stations and DJs. Before long, the hit single had gained the status of being a cult hit. A true turning point for the band came when Mc Double D and Angus had the opportunity to meet Connie Mitchell, who had previously performed with Primary. Connie went on to perform the vocals for the new band's self-titled debut album. 'I Love It', the Funky House Music tinged first single, rapidly shot upward on the charts, peaking at the #5 spot on the Australian Dance Chart. Follow-up singles also performed well, with 'Tonite Only', a remix, hitting the #1 spot on the ARIA Club Chart. Since that time, Sneaky Sound System's debut album has gone on to achieve platinum sales in Australia. In the last few years, the group has continued to gain fame and notoriety. In 2006, they performed as an opening act for Robbie Williams and have also performed during the 2007 Australian tour of Scissor Sisters. In 2007, the group's widespread success earned them six nominations for ARIA Music Awards. This was the largest number of nominations of any Australian artist during that year. In addition, the group's nominations matched the record for the most nominations that had been ever received by an independent artist. In addition to these nominations, Sneaky Sound System also received a nomination for Fav Band at the Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards that same year. It certainly seems that Sneaky Sound System is headed toward not only success in Australia but around the world as well. The group has signed an international record deal that will provide for the release of their music not only in the UK but around the globe.
