Avian flu strains in China and southeast Asia are resistant to amantadine, but strains circulating elsewhere seem to be sensitive. Amantadine might appear to be a wonder drug but is still not without its side effects.

Common adverse reactions include - dizziness, constipation, a purple or blue network pattern on the skin, difficulty urinating, insomnia, nervousness, nausea, vomiting, headache, irritability, upset stomach (should be taken with food or milk), blurred vision, swelling of the ankles and depression.
