The Power of Doing Nothing for Chronic Pain Relief - Articles SurfingDo we really NEED to DO in order to get relief from chronic body pain, or is there an alternative? Nearly every pain relief technique has been developed based on a philosophy that it can only be a good pain relief technique if it manipulates your body in some way, e.g. applies pressure, shakes, etc. This seems to come from the 'need to be busy / need to do / need external influence for success' syndrome that we (as a society) suffer from in all aspects of life. Now understand me correctly, I haven't got anything against using these body manipulation techniques. For example, I actually love to have a massage, and strongly encourage you to do the same. However, realize that these techniques aren't going to cure your body pain. Do them just for the fun of it! So, why don't body manipulation therapies cure your pain? Well, here are some questions: Is DOING indeed the answer to curing your chronic body pain so you can enjoy your life? Have we all fallen into the trap of believing the idea that we need to DO something to FORCE 'wellness' into our lives with techniques such as body manipulation (either with equipment or another person)? Are we turning into human doings instead of human beings? Our whole society seems to revolve around doing, doing, doing as the necessary tool to achievement ' to the point where people become stressed and therefore in all likelihood increase their chronic body pain. Less and less do we focus on what each of us truly is: a human being. Nature is the best example. A tree sways in the wind. A plant grows out of a seed naturally. The wind blows this way, then that way. A bird flies effortlessly. Water flows. The earth turns, and moves around in the universe. All these things occur naturally, without force. The same should count for us. We should focus more on our 'beingness', rather than searching for the 'technique' that will fix us. Having said that, it can be difficult to just BE when we live in a society that promotes DOING as a way for success. Sayings like 'no pain, no gain' proclaim this too. We are led to believe if you do not work hard and struggle, you are not going to get anywhere! In my opinion, this is wrong. So, how do we get pain relief by doing nothing (or just being)? Meditation and relaxation are good examples, but techniques like these can be difficult when your body is in pain. 'First make yourself comfortable' is a near universal statement made at the beginning of any meditation or therapeutic process. After a few moments of shifting your body to get comfortable the 'real' activity begins. In my experience 'making myself comfortable' did not relieve my chronic pain; it actually made me more aware of my pain! Thus, I became very interested to discover how to be comfortable and relaxed in my body. After years of exploration I found that the greatest comfort occurred when all parts of my body were simultaneously supported in a position where all joints were centered and all voluntary muscles were disengaged. In this physically motionless place I began to quiet my mind. As I approached stillness I started to realize that true comfort comes from the spirit within, or said in another way: true comfort comes from just being. This discovery led me to the invention of a chronic pain relief solution that does not DO anything to your body ' it just merely puts you in a position where you can comfortably BE. And that is where the magic begins.
