Where Diets Go Wrong - Articles SurfingWhen we decide to lose weight the first thing we do is eat less food, right? We may miss meals or eat small amounts in the hope that our body will burn off the fat on it's own. In actual fact eating less makes it more difficult to lose weight. When researchers compare overweight and thin people they find that they both eat roughly the same number of calories. What makes overweight people different is the amount of fat they consume. Thin people eat less fat and more complex carbohydrates. It is important to remember that losing weight is not something you can do overnight. A carefully planned weight loss program requires common sense and certain guidelines. Unfortunately there is a lot of bad information around and lots of desperate people are easily dued and ripped off. Everyday we open magazines and newspapers with advertisements touting some new product, pill or patch that will take excess weight off quickly. There are too many people looking for that "magic" cure. Millions of us are trying to lose weight spending billions every year on diet programmes and weight loss products. Often you can lose some weight but over the coming years you put it back on, and more besides! A survery was carried out recently to try and determine if any commercial diet program could provide long term success and surprisingly, not a single program could do so. A common myth is that people get heavy by eating too many calories. Calories are a consideration, it's true, but overall they are not the cause of obesity. We actually take in fewer cleries each day than we did at the beginning of the century. Therefore, if caleries alone are the reason we become overweight, we should all be thin. Collectively we are heavier than ever. Partly because we are more sedentary now, but equally important is the fact that the fat content of our diet has changed dramatically. People who diet without exercise often get fatter with time. Although the weight may initially drop while dieting, such weight loss mainly consists of water and muscle. When the weight returns it comes back as fat. Therefore to avoid getting fatter over time we need to increase the metabolism by exercising regularly. Select an exercise routine that you are confortable with and remember that walking is one of the best and easiest exercises for strengthening your bones, controlling your weight and toning your muscles. If you like what you have read I have written a book which talks about obesity, what causes it, how we can cure it and more importantly how we can maintain that weight loss over time.
