5 Things You Should Know About DIY Home Security Systems - Articles Surfing

This article explains some basic principles about DIY Home Security Systems that every home owner would have know.

1. DIY Home Security Systems

A lot of DIY home security systems and individual products are available on the market today. They can be installed with relative ease. Most of them are available through various outlets. They range from very simple systems to elaborate ones that include video surveillance. The system you choose will depend on your budget, expertise and the perceived threat of intrusion.

2. Some Basic Knowledge of Low-Voltage Wiring

If you know how to use a few hand tools, and an electric drill you could easily install door and window contacts, as it requires some basic knowledge of low-voltage wiring. DIY home security can include closed circuit television cameras and monitors. These can also be hooked up to a digital recorder or videocassette recorder to document every activity.

3. A Word of Caution: Always Respect Privacy

Videotaping in some areas may result in legal actions based on violations of privacy
Please remember: cameras should never be placed in areas where family members or visiting guests expect privacy (e.g. bathroom, bedrooms).

4. Wireless or Not? - Depends on Your Budget

As part of a DIY home security system, many devices are available in wireless format, which eliminates the need for extensive installation of wires running through the house. Even cameras are available in wireless format. Then you will have an installation outdoors without having to put holes in outer walls.

5. You Can Hook up Your System to a Video Cassette Recorder

With a time-lapse VCR, capable of saving 24-hours of video on a single T-160 tape, you only have to change it once a day. Maintain at least one-week's worth of video of your DIY home security system. While many hooking up a DIY home security system say that 24 hours is enough, if nothing happens just tape over it, others contend it may be a day or so before it is discovered.

Protect your home and your privacy in the best way. With the home security systems, you will have a total convenience.
