The only thing that can limit your ideas for deck railings is the limit of your imagination (and maybe your pocketbook). Think about all of the great ideas you can bring to the design of your deck railings. Your deck is a central part of your life. It is where your family and friends gather for parties, barbecues, watching the birds in your yard, or enjoying the sight of your flowers and trees. An evening spent on the deck in the mild night air can be a lovely and romantic break from our hectic lives. If you want your deck to be a little different, and you have some extra room to work in, you can design a deck that flows and curves gracefully, instead of having the standard square or rectangle deck. In designing a deck of any kind, remember that you want to create as open and flowing a space as possible. Chopping up the deck into different layers, with spaces between, will not be as attractive. One large, open area is much more attractive, even though you may get the same square footage from either. You should make sure your deck has access points every so often. If it is completly enclosed, without any openings, it will feel laustrophobic to your guests, as if they were trapped on the deck. Make sure there are openings every twenty or so feet. If you want to create the beautiful, modern feel to your deck, make sure it flows gracefully, rather than have a lot of corners and angles. Too many turns and angles cuts the flow and makes the look too choppy. So, unless you are constrained by space, try to have the deck turn on curves rather than angles. There are so many modern materials to choose from for deck rail materials, that you can have a field day choosing. Just make sure that your deck railing material offers a pretty glow and luster and that it is easy to maintain. You don't want to spend your summer painting or polishing your deck, you want to enjoy it. This leaves out wood as the most desireable material for modern deck railing material. Bare wood is subject to rot from weather and therefore requires maintenance to protect it. Wood is also not easily turned for the flowing kind of look of a modern deck railing. Stainless steel, powder coated steel, anodized aluminum or steel coated with PVC are the more preferred materials. They all need little maintenance and can be easily worked to suit the curves of a modern deck. Depending on the budget of the homeowner, one of these will fit the bill. When building a deck, you have to take into account access by handicapped individuals. This does not just mean people in wheel chairs, but also those who just have a hard time walking. All of the entrances to the deck should have easily climbed gradual steps in addition to a ramp, and the rails should be very sturdy for anyone to hold onto easily.
