How To Choose Your Vacuum Cleaner - Articles Surfing

Unless you have hardwood floors throughout your home, a vacuum cleaner is a necessity in the modern household, as common as a refrigerator or a toaster. And just like those appliances, there are hundreds of brands and styles of vacuum cleaners, all with their own advantages and drawbacks.

When shopping for a vacuum cleaner, it is best to consider the requirements of your specific home. For example, do you have a lot of stairs? Some models will be easier to use on staircases than others. You'd want a lightweight unit, not just for help in vacuuming the stairs themselves, but for the fact that you'll have to lug the thing up to the second floor to clean there, too. If you have a particularly large two-story house, it might be worth investing in a second vacuum cleaner, one for upstairs and one for downstairs.

Also note the style of carpeting in your home, whether it's a deep shag or an almost flat blend of some kind. Many upright vacuum cleaners have brushes that can be adjusted to suit the kind of carpet you have, but some do not. Make sure the vacuum you're considering will be compatible with your carpet.

In recent years, upright vacuums cleaners have been improved to be less taxing on the user's muscles. Some vacuums are now self-propelled, meaning they move in the direction they're pointed, thus requiring less effort to use. They have generally become more lightweight, too, with comfortable handle grips and other ergonomic factors. It doesn't hurt to "test drive" a vacuum a little bit before buying it, to make sure it feels comfortable and easy to use.

If you have a basement or shop in your home that you use for hobbies or woodworking, a wet/dry vac might be a wise investment. One of these units can clean up liquid spills and do ordinary household cleaning, too, making it dual-purpose.
