Why do we promote a website? Or why do we optimize and get incoming links for a site?

Obviously to increase page rank in search engine result pages for different keywords. However, most of the inexperienced webmasters simply resort to traditional link building tactics like reciprocal linking, directory submission etc. They do not get much of targeted users from those directories. They only contribute to increase website's popularity in search engine.

However, if we become a bit more cautious and tactical about our link building strategies, we can get a great number of visitors from those links.

So, how to get more visitors to your site?

The best way to promote your site is to promote others. If you appreciate other bloggers, they will be happy to appreciate you. In that case, if you have a blog attached with your site, it would be of great help.

When you say something about some bloggers or websites, find out what others are saying about them. Let them know about your thoughts, a trackback will be just good to get visitors from their blog.

Participate in different niche forums and get links in the signature with a catchy headline.

Participate in social bookmarking sites ' create groups and promote your site with others.

Create a group or network of niche bloggers and link to each others as and when possible.

Comment on other blogs (do not say 'hello' alone) and spread your name.

Start a controversy or present a view opposing the common notion. However, this is a risky initiative as, if you cannot support your position, you may loose your credibility.

Answer relevant questions at different question answer websites (like Yahoo Answers, Answers. com, Google Groups) and link to relevant pages of your site.

Write and syndicate articles and press releases (news worthy) at different niche directories that cater to your target audience. It also helps for better search engine rankings.

Think about investing on PayPerClick.

If you publish a blog, make sure that it has RSS or Atom subscription options. You can also add a 'Subscribe via Email' option to sustain existing visitors.

Give your visitors the option to send the content to a friend via email (email the post).

Use targeted keywords for every post.

Advertise on other niche sites (think about banner link or paid reviews).

Create communities in different popular social networking websites like MySpace around your product and subtly promote your product.

Offer free products and supplementary tools.

Take your business from online to offline, participate in different seminars and trade fairs in your niche and promote your site.

Submit interesting videos in different video sharing sites.

If you sell something, send the product to niche bloggers (if you can afford it) and ask for reviews.

Publish interesting content in websites like Squidoo and Hubpages and get relevant links to your site.

Think about email marketing. You can also invest to buy advertisement space in other's mails.

Conduct research and surveys and ask your visitors to participate and spread the word.

Engage a cause other than plain business.

Link out to different blogs from articles published in your site.

Invest on proper branding of your site.

And do not invest on some banned tricks to get easy visitors to your site or to improve search engine rank.
