The Risks Of Using An Over The Counter Sleep Drug - Articles Surfing

Is sleeping more of a problem for you than a relaxing convenience? Many people find that taking a sleep drug can be an option to help prevent their sleep problems from worsening. Still, the risks associated with these drugs are very high. In order to alleviate these risks, it helps to be more aware of them and to thereby avoid them. Awareness is a great remedy and prevention for any problem and this is especially true for sleep drugs.

The FDA warns users of some of the possible side effects that may be caused by sleep drugs. According to them, certain sleep drugs carry warnings of the risks and doctors are required to tell their patients of these detrimental effects. Such drugs may cause life threatening problems or complex allergic reactions and one of these reactions is known as Angioedema. It involves the unfortunate instance of facial swelling which, although rare, is still quite serious when it happens.

A patient, or anyone using drugs of this kind, must always be aware of the precautionary measures that are required. Sleeping drugs should not be taken with alcohol for the obvious reason that the two drugs will mix and produce very unfortunate consequences. Users should also avoid taking these drugs in combination with other sedatives because they might only worsen their sleeping problem. Most importantly, sleep drugs should always be taken in their recommended dosage as prescribed by a doctor.

Many patients in the past have suffered terrible problems as a result of abusing their sleep medication. One reported case involved a very nervous woman who was finding it very hard to fall asleep each night and always found herself waking up on the couch around five or six in the morning. She had been staying up until two or three in the morning watching television and could only relax for a few hours on the couch before she would wake up again at the crack of dawn. She decided to start taking some sleep medication and found that she could sleep eight or nine hours through the use of the drug. Unfortunately, she began abusing the medication after finding that she couldn't sleep at all without her pills. After only two weeks, she had increased the dosage to two pills each night, thinking that she was really helping herself to get more sleep. The pills began losing their effect after three weeks so she went to a doctor and pretended that she had not been taking anything but only wanted an initial prescription for her pills. The doctor agreed to prescribe her the pills and she soon began taking as many as three pills a night which resulted in a nervous reaction during the day where she felt she could not concentrate or sit still. Eventually, in a panic, she went to the doctor and told him the truth about what she had done. The doctor had her check into a detox clinic to get her off the medication and she was treated for a chronic form of insomnia for several months afterwards.

Stories like these teach us that we should take extra effort in reminding ourselves of the proper way to use sleep medication. You don't want to aggravate your problem by taking too much medicine but only to help yourself temporarily to get back on a regular sleep pattern. Ask your doctors' opinion if you are not sure of what sleep product to use. Also make sure and follow the proper dosage that is prescribed by the doctor. If a problem arises from the use of the drug, gradually minimize the dosage until you are no longer taking any drugs at all. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to good health and this is the best way to make yourself a more active YOU!
