Acid reflux isn't really a matter of life or death, but serious damage to some organs can occur, along with other medical complications, if it is not dealt with swiftly. There are great medications for this, but they tend to just tackle the symptoms and not the underlying cause. Also, for some people the thought of taking medication forever can pretty unpleasant and hard on the pocket too. As a way round this dilemma there are natural acid reflux solution options that you can consider. There are many to try, but they should be used with care just as with any other type of treatment.

The favored way of dealing with acid reflux and getting to the root cause of the problem is to take a good look at diet and exercise habits. There are foods that are known to aggravate acid reflux, and these include: foods with high fat content, anything with caffeine in it, including tea, coffee and soda, alcohol, spicy foods, dairy products, tomatoes and citrus fruits. Starting by eliminating those items can help a great deal.

Exercise is important for all round good health, but some exercises can induce acid reflux by pushing on the stomach and forcing contents upwards. Avoiding exercise for an hour after eating and avoiding jarring exercises can help keep acid reflux at bay while still achieving your fitness goals. Many people who have started a new exercise program have found that their symptoms with GERD are much less than they use to be.

The degree of relief felt by making these small changes can be significant for some acid reflux sufferers, even to the point of being able to do away with medicines altogether. Although, it is important to discuss stopping medication with your doctor first.

Taking apple cider vinegar with water and a little honey to reduce the bitterness anecdotally has proven successful, although there is little research available to back up the claim. The suggested dosage is two tablespoons in water after each meal of the day. Some suggest putting some baking soda in this drink as well, and that might be something to look into if the apple cider vinegar is not working on its own. Some report that this was the answer they were looking for, and it was much cheaper than mediations. Other reported that it did nothing for them. Overall, this should be a very safe thing to try, but adding baking soda might be something to research before trying.

There are a few different types of natural remedies that can also help, but may not work for everyone. Pineapple is one of these as it is full of digestive enzymes, which aid the digestion process. However, pineapple does appear to be one of the foods that not all acid reflux sufferers can tolerate. This can be taken by way of juice if desired, or as a bromelain tablet. Read the label for dosing instructions. Chicory root might also be helpful. This can be brewed into a tea or ground and sprinkled on meals.

As with anything, it is a good idea to discuss any natural acid reflux remedy with your doctor. Though a medical professional won't have any objections to you drinking pineapple juice, there may be some reasons why it is not a good idea to take some supplements. They can work really well, but they might also react with some prescription medications.

With natural remedies it can be a case of trial and error so try keeping a food diary to see if you are experiencing an improvement in symptoms. They may take a little while to show results so give them some time before deciding they aren't going to work at all, and it is also important to remember that if a doctor says something should not be done, there is probably a very good reason for it. Use common sense when attempting any natural acid reflux solution.
