How Can I Get Out Of The Routine And Be Motivated? - Articles Surfing"I do not seem to have anything going in my life, just the same cycle day in and day out. I feel overwhelmed in all aspects of my life from marriage to work... I smoke, I over eat and I do not have much energy. What can I do?" -Divakar from Malaysia It's important that you were able to articulate your thoughts and feelings and it's even more important that you could acknowledge your unhappiness. After all, you're being honest with yourself and not hiding behind an excuse. I consider routines to be comfort items. It becomes comfortable to do the same things every day because it's hard to see things any other way. After all, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" as they always say. Well I'm not one to agree with that phrase because you are obviously unhappy with the routine and it's causing you marital, health and career stagnation. Eliminate "Routine Stagnation" By Shocking the System I would recommend shocking the system. Do something out of your routine. It could be as simple as taking your wife out for a walk (I'd bet something so simple like this would be quite unexpected!) or try going to a place you've never been before. Take up a hobby. Ask your boss for a different working environment or seek out a new place of work. Fast for a day, eating only bread and water or try quitting smoking for a week. The whole point is to do something that you wouldn't consider normally, except when you do it, really enjoy it. You have to be passionate about your goals and yourself. Of course, some of these things might be awfully hard in practice, but no one said life was easy! Gradual change is what you need in this case. Just take on one priority at a time and work hard on improving that area. Surround Yourself With Successful, Non-Routine People Another tip would be to surround yourself with people with higher energy levels then try to match them. Consider joining a business club or get more active with your religion. It's important to start meeting new people. When things get uncomfortable (and they will, after all, you're used to a more restrictive comfort zone), stick with it. You won't feel satisfied or fulfilled until you begin taking small steps outside of your routine. Just realize that you're not in on this alone. Share your feelings with your wife, family or co-workers and get them involved in the process. After all, if you have no support to improve from family or friends, you're less likely to. What Are You Going To Do About It? The one thing I want to point out is about the excessive eating and smoking. I wouldn't say that these are the causes of your problems. They are symptoms of an overall bigger picture. The problem is that you feel bored or unhappy with how things are, so you end up taking it out on your health. Are you unhappy at work? Is there a better business opportunity that you can be taking advantage of? Are you satisfied with your day-to-day routine? These are some important questions to ask yourself. The most important question, though, is the one that will force you to act: What are you going to do about it? And what are you willing to do about it? The key point, though, is to work on one thing at a time. Don't try to conquer all issues (boredom, over-eating, smoking, work, family, etc) all at once.
