Events of the Isle of Wight - Articles SurfingBelow is a list of events on the Isle of Wight for 2007. Whatever your interests, there is always plenty to see and do here on this wonderful holiday island. As you will see, the Island is not just a holiday destination for the Spring and Summer, try a visit in the Autumn and Winter too - you will not be disappointed. Every year the events on the Isle of Wight get better and better and bigger and bigger! Remainder of 2006: NOVEMBER Sat 25: Winter Bazaar - Whitwell Village Hall. (from 4.30pm) Sat 25 & Sun 26: Carol Singing at Osborne House and Gardens. (from 12pm) DECEMBER Sat 9: Christmas Concert by Shanklin Town Brass Band - United Reformed Church, High St, Shanklin. (7.30pm) Tue 12: Xmas Music by the Orpheus Singers - St John's Church, Newport. (7.30pm) Sat 16: Carols in the Square - Yarmouth Town Square. (from 6pm) Sat 16: Ryde Chorus (family carol concert) - St Saviours Church, Ryde. (7.30pm) Sat 16: Calico at the Riverside Centre - Newport. (7.30pm) Sun 31: Forty Years On... - Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Havenstreet. 2007 APRIL Isle of Wight International Jazz Festival (Fri 13 - Sun 15) In and around Ventnor, the primary location for jazz in the south of the UK, with over 120 acts performing live in a whole host of venues all over this picturesque Victorian seaside town. MAY Isle of Wight Walking Festival (Sat 5 - Sun 20) The Isle of Wight Walking Festival has been held on the Island every May since 1999 and is the largest walking festival in the UK. It is an extremely popular event and attracts huge numbers from all over the world.The festival offers more than 100 guided walks that cater for all ages and abilities. Included in the festival is "Walk the Wight", a long distance sponsored walk, with proceeds going to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. JUNE Isle of Wight Festival (Fri 8 - Sun 10*) * Dates to be confirmed. Major music festival, held at Seaclose Park, Newport. The arena is normally open from 5pm until 11pm on the Friday, 11am until midnight on the Saturday, and 11am until 11pm on the Sunday. JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race (Sat 23) The UK's largest and most famous yachting race, with around 1500 craft taking part in the 50-mile course. AUGUST Skandia Cowes Week (Sat 4 - Sat 11) The world's paramount sailing event, featuring in the region of 1000 yachts and 8000 competitors. With its exciting racing schedule and varied shore side activities, Skandia Cowes Week offers something for everyone. Don't miss the spectacular fireworks display on the final evening. The Rolex Fastnet Yacht Race (Starts Sun 12) One of the toughest ocean races on the calendar, attracting over 250 yachts. The race commences at Cowes, goes past The Needles, then along the coast to the Irish Sea, round the Fastnet Rock and terminates in Plymouth. The race covers 608 miles and lasts up to 5 days. Isle of Wight Garlic Festival (Sat 18 & Sun 19) Hosted at Newchurch Showground, this is one of the largest events on the Island and attracts around 25,000 visitors each year. Don't be fooled by the name of the event, this is much more than just garlic. It is two days packed with food, drink, music, fun, attractions and much more. Don't you dare miss it! Isle of Wight International Scooter Rally (Fri 24 - Mon 27) Held at Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde, this is widely recognised as the biggest scooter event in the world. A fun-packed weekend for the scooter enthusiast culminating with a round the Island ride-out, this is an event that just has to be attended by every self-respecting scooterist. The World Windsurfing Grand Prix Formula Racing Championships (Mon 27 - Mon 3 Sept) The UK's biggest windsurfing event ever, with around 100 entrants competing, representing some 40 different countries. SEPTEMBER Bestival (Fri 7 - Sun 9) Organised by Radio 1 DJ, Rob Da Bank, this is an excellent 3-day music event held at Robin Hill Country Park in Newport. The Isle of Wight Cycling Festival (Sat 15 - Sun 23) Every year the Island hosts the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival, which features several different cycling events for all abilities and disciplines. There is an on-road 62 mile round the Island race known as "Cycle The Wight", or for the more resilient cyclist, the 3, 7 and 14 hills challenges known as "The Hills Killer" are a real test of stamina.
