Can Spider Veins Be Treated? - Articles SurfingSymptons such as heaviness, aching, itching and night cramps are often caused by what are called Spider Veins. They are like varicose veins but smaller and start out as blue or red squiggles. You will find these on the surface of your thighs, calves or ankles, and appear red, blue or purple. About one third of the adult female population suffers from this problem. It is possible for spider veins to be associated with larger varicose veins located deeper within the skin. Spider veins appear in various forms, each of which takes on its distinct development and pattern. They may appear in a pattern that resembles branches on a tree. They may be in a linear pattern that appears as thin separate lines. Or they may appear in a spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a central point. There are a number of causes that contribute to the development of spider veins. These include: pregnancy, hormonal factors, weight gain, hereditary, or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing. In order to properly prevent spider veins from developing, there are a number of steps to be carefully studied and learned. Always elevate your legs when possible, keeping your feet positioned higher than heart level. Another important factor is to constantly exercise, daily and actively. Anything that activates the calf muscle pump will drastically reduce pressure in your veins. Attempt to maintain the current weight level you are comfortable and healthy with to also reduce pressure in your veins. Do not sit for extended periods of time or allow your legs to build pressure. Another option is to consider is using compression hoses, which counter the pressure building up on your legs, allowing your blood to flow out of your legs and straight to your heart. They may also reduce the risk of forming a deep vein blood clot. Contact your local physician to find out which prevention method will work best. If it is too late and you have developed spider veins, there are options to explore. A very common form of treatment is schlerotherapy. Using small needles, the veins are injected with a solution, causing them to collapse and fade. This procedure will surely help related symptoms, and improve the overall cosmetic appearance. You may need several sessions to obtain maximum results, depending on the severity of the spider veins and the area being treated. The procedure usually takes between 5 to 30 minutes, and may be painful, causing a burning or cramping feeling for a few minutes where the shot was given. Laser treatment is also an option to explore when treating spider veins. The veins are eliminated permanently with this method, as intense light is focused on the veins. This procedure is used especially when small needles cannot be used to treat smaller spider veins. The cost for laser treatment can be more expensive than schlerotherapy, but can be quicker and more effective. If you have noticed any related symptoms to spider veins, please consult a local vein treatment center to find out if schlerotherapy or laser treatment is right for you. v
