In trials carried out it was shown that those patients taking either fresh (raw) garlic or pure garlic oil showed a reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings. Garlic also helps reduce the levels of cholesterol and other kinds of plaque building up in the blood vessels, and dilate the arteries so the heart can more easily push blood through them. Another herb, which seems to contain many of the beneficial qualities of garlic, is hawthorn. This small shrub which is a member of the Rose family, was traditionally used to ward of evil spirits in medieval times by hanging a branch over the entranceway into the house. A study that was conducted on people who suffered with type 2 diabetes found that after 16 weeks of taking the hawthorn extract that their blood pressure had dropped. It also showed that there where no adverse reactions with other drugs the participants where taking. It is important to discuss any herbal or alternative supplements that you are considering taking with your doctor. Many natural alternatives or complementary preparations will not interact with conventional blood pressure medication, but some of them do so its best to be prepared. For instance, Garlic is a natural blood thinner, so it may interact with other blood thinning medication and the doses may need to be amended to get the same effect.
