What Makes New Zealand Colostrum Better? - Articles SurfingAs more is understood about the influence of colostrum sources and processing techniques on the overall effectiveness of nutritional and dietary colostrum supplements, New Zealand continues to stand out as a leading provider of high quality colostrum, and a leading manufacturer of high quality colostrum supplements. New Zealand's climate, farming practices, and production regulations all contribute in making New Zealand colostrum unsurpassed in its purity and biological activity, and New Zealand colostrum supplements unrivaled in the efficiency of their manufacture and the uniformity of their source supply. New Zealand farming practices are very strictly regulated, and dairy farmers in New Zealand are required to uphold standards of quality similar to those governing the production of certified organic dairy products in the United States. New Zealand cows are raised in an environment that is free of pesticides, and they are not treated with growth hormones or antibiotics. Combined with New Zealand's heightened standards for the certification, pasteurization, and storage of the dairy products it produces, these naturally healthy cows make New Zealand colostrum among the purest in the world. The feeding practices of New Zealand dairies are also subject to very high standards, and are very different from those of the United States. Whereas organic herds in the US are often restricted to a diet a dried, processed foods, New Zealand cows are always pasture fed, and this is thought to contribute to the superior quality of New Zealand colostrum as well. Pasture-fed cows are exposed through grazing to a full spectrum of antigens in their environment, and therefore are able to develop a stronger natural immunity. It is believed that pasture feeding provides a more optimal diet, and has been further suggested that the enhanced immunity of pasture fed cows makes New Zealand colostrum more effective through increased concentrations of its beneficial immunotherapeutic components, and the transfer of this enhanced immunity to humans. Because New Zealand's climate restricts its calving season to a single three-month period within each year, New Zealand colostrum can be collected in bulk and transported immediately from farms to processing plants. This eliminates the need for freezing colostrum after it is harvested, allowing New Zealand colostrum to be processed without damaging its protein molecules through the application of rapid freezing and thawing techniques. This is in general not possible in the US and other countries, where calving occurs year-round and colostrum is collected in batches too small for their individual processing to be economically efficient. The ability to collect colostrum in bulk and use gentler processing techniques therefore contributes to both the higher consistency and superior bioactivity found in New Zealand colostrum supplements.
